Bad news everyone: We're in for a buggier summer than usual. Pests that would have died in the cold spent the unusually warm winter months breeding and are now ready to feast.
Mosquitoes can carry threatening diseases such as malaria, West Nile and encephalitis.
Here are some natural ways to prevent mosquitoes from biting:
-use soybean-oil-based repellents
-use citronella candles
-the smoke from decorative patio torches
-Eliminate standing water (if possible)
-Sit near fans; mosquitoes have trouble flying. If you sit next to, under or within the wind current of a fan you can avoid being bitten.
-Use lemon eucalyptus oil
-Use catnip oil, it repels mosquitoes however it does attract cats and if you are not fond of or are allergic to cats use a different repellent.
-Cover your exposed skin (preferably light colored clothing)
-The bug shirt is the ultimate solution
-Fresh yarrow plant leaves rubbed in your hands and then taking your hands rub the rest of your exposed skin will repel mosquitoes and other insects.
-Mosquitoes are attracted to dim light; so don't even bother using a bug zapper.
